Rae Freeman Bio

Rae Freeman is a visual artist working primarily in painting. Born in Sydney and now based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Freeman’s work explores the complex interplay between the Australian natural landscape and contemporary mysticism. Her practice considers how symbolic imagery can act as both personal and cultural signifiers, often filtered through a post-colonial lens.

Working with abstraction and representation in equal measure, Freeman’s paintings evoke a dreamlike sensibility, frequently rendered in dark, atmospheric nightscapes. Through layered tonal shifts, rich textures, and a painterly approach to contrast and form, her work invites viewers into immersive environments where the unseen and the mythic intersect with the psychological and emotional.

Freeman’s previous exploration of metaphysical themes alludes to the underlying conversation within all her work: where does spirituality fit into the contemporary psyche?

Freeman holds a Bachelor of Arts (Visual) with Honours from the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University (2008). Her work has been exhibited nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, including at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Firstdraft Gallery, and White Wall Art Projects. She has been a finalist in several awards including the Marrickville Art Prize and the White Wall Art Prize, and received the CCAS Emerging Artist Residency Award in 2009.

Freeman continues to deepen her engagement with painting as both material and metaphor, using it to explore the entangled relationship between place, memory, mysticism, and identity.
